What Does State Farm Pet Insurance Cover?

While some pet insurers provide a variety of different plans, each offering varying levels of protection for your pets, State Farm has one simple plan. As it’s the only one available, it offers a decent amount of protection.

Common dog & cat Illnesses and injuries are fully covered, meaning you’ll never have to worry about expensive bills for diagnostic tests, surgeries, hospital stays, medications and prescriptions, veterinary supplements, and prosthetic devices. Surprisingly, alternative remedies such as herbal therapy are also included in the plan – usually an add-on with other pet insurance providers.

In addition to illness and injury coverage, breed-specific conditions (hereditary and congenital) are also included in your plan. That means your pets are fully protected against conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, diabetes, cherry eye, and thyroid disease.

    Pro's

    • Instant reimbursement with direct payments to vets
    • One simple plan offers a lot of protection
    • Alternative therapies included at no additional cost

    Con's

    • No wellness coverage and not available in Florida

State Farm Pet Insurance Reimbursement and Deductibles

Choosing a higher deductible can reduce the cost of your monthly payments. With State Farm, you can choose a deductible amount in the hundreds, from $100 up to $1000. There’s a flat reimbursement rate of 90%, which is considered the industry average (and best reimbursement figure) by most providers.

State Farm Pet Insurance Waiting Period

Policies have a seven-day waiting period, which is half the average of other pet insurance providers. There’s a 30-day waiting period for illnesses, however. In terms of reimbursement waiting periods, State Farm can pay your vet directly. This means you don’t have to waste time submitting claims online.

How Much Does State Farm Pet Insurance Cost?

For a two-year-old mixed breed dog on a plan with a $500 deductible and unlimited payout, we were given a cost of $63.97. We’d recommend visiting the State Farm website to get a free quote for your pet, as costs change depending on location and your deductible.

    Customer Service and Satisfaction

State Farm only started offering pet insurance in May 2020, so there aren’t that many reviews available online yet. However, as a general insurance provider, State Farm has a 2.7 rating on TrustPilot – not the best. As its pet insurance plans are technically provided by Trupanion, you’ll be glad to know their rating is much higher: 4.3! Customer service and support are great as you can reach someone 24/7.

Our Rating – How Pawsome is State Farm Pet Insurance?

By only offering one plan, State Farm has kept pet insurance simple but there are areas it's missing out on. Unless you’re already a State Farm customer, you may be better off going directly through Trupanion or trying other highly recommended pet insurers instead. You can save up to 25% extra on veterinary services through a plan with Pet Assure, while Healthy Paws’ one simple plan trumps what State Farm offers in our opinion. If you haven’t got a pet yet and you’re looking for the perfect dog, you’ll want to check out PetPremium instead, as it lets you access a breeder directory to find the perfect dog for you.
